Human beings face very serious problems. Global warming, the hole in the ozone layer and disappearing rainforests, to name but a few.

Human beings are facing grave problems, which we’re unable to solve.

Governments and international organisations are accelerating technological developments, applying a variety of policies and implementing systems.

However, if we want to solve the problem of global ecology, it’s impossible to do so only by developing technologies, implementing policies or introducing new systems.

So, what do we need?

We need to change our ‘way of life’.

This is what we are asked to do.

Until each single one of us grasps the importance of nature, until we change our lives and protect nature, we humans will not be able to solve the problems of global ecology.

But what does this entail?

Unless each one of us changes his or her way of life, unless each one of us grows as a person, human beings as a whole will not be able to solve these ecological problems and keep on growing as people.

This is what it entails.

I’d like to mention another important example.

War and conflict.

After 5,000 years of history, human beings have not yet been able to solve this problem.

There are wars in several places in the world. Racial conflicts between people which have been going on for a long time. Recurrent and devastating terrorism. Dictatorships and repression of human rights.

Human beings cannot solve these problems.

Governments and international organisations try to solve these problems through diplomatic and political initiatives. But if we truly want a war and conflict-free world, diplomatic and political measures are not sufficient.

So, what do we need?

To change our consciousness.

This is what we are asked to do above all.

To eliminate wars and conflicts in this world, above all, each one of us needs to be absolutely determined to seek true peace.

We still have racial prejudices, discrimination and religious hostility in our hearts. We must be aware of this and get rid of them.

When each one of us changes his or her consciousness, he or she grows as a human being.

Human beings will be able to solve the problem of war and conflicts and grow as people.

In order to do so, each one of us has to make a commitment:

Unless each one of us changes as an individual, the world will not change. Unless each one of us grows as an individual, human beings will not grow.

We have to be ready for it.

Our mission is to open up human history. To say goodbye to this pre-historic period of human history, full of hatreds, suffering and pain, to draw the curtain and make way for true history. In this way we shall open the future of humanity.

This is the mission for those of us who live in the 21st century.

‘Mission’ in Japanese is Shimei. And Shimei means ‘to use your life’.
