Helen Evans, born and raised in Swaziland, now living in London: "In tribal African cultures there was always a large tree (or group of trees) near the village where the discussions took place. Tribal Africans followed a much more democratic approach than we Westerners did in that all members of the tribe would need to agree to a choice that affected the village before any action was taken, so much time was spent talking until everyone agreed. Thus the tree's place in village life was paramount ... I like the analogy of the tree providing both energetic and physical protection for the tribe as they peacefully achieved unity."
